S&C Non-Wires Alternatives (NWA) is responsible for the sales and development of advanced distributed energy projects involving transaction structures beyond conventional price delivery. The Business Development Director reports to the Vice President-NWA, and the primary focus is to develop NWA revenue-generating opportunities with utilities as they relate to partnerships, transactions, regulations and interconnection standards of distributed energy projects. Target market segments are utilities of all sizes and ownership structures within S&C’s Western US and West Coast sales territories. This role will also cover Central and South America, the Caribbean, and EMEA on an opportunistic basis. Experience in smart grid technologies and applications, grid services, and emerging distributed energy technologies are required; experience working with utility rate structures and associated regulations as well as utility ownership and operations of NWA solutions is preferred.

Projects may include assessments, design, construction, commissioning, service support, operations and maintenance services, as well as project financing and ownership. Applied technologies will include distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS), distributed energy resources (DERs), and the full S&C product portfolio. Goals include: (1) identifying and building productive relationships with utility decision-makers in NWA; (2) identifying customer challenges and proposing NWA solutions; (3) identifying and quantifying viable NWA transaction structures for utilities; (4) working with utility customers and regulators to develop tariff structures and programs that facilitate NWA solutions; (5) developing NWA projects through existing and new customers; and (6) contributing to organizational planning in response to growth in the NWA business.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Engage utility customers and partners to identify NWA opportunities and work with them to develop comprehensive solutions, including mutually acceptable financial, legal, and operational terms.
  • Work with local public utility commissions (PUCs), municipalities, and other stakeholders to advance partnerships and NWA based projects.
  • Work with Sales Representatives and Territory Managers to promote NWA solutions.
  • Participate in the development of marketing and messaging efforts surrounding S&C’s NWA offering.
  • Communicate specific product needs to S&C Product Development toward better serving the NWA market.

To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:

  • Proven business development, market assessment and project capture experience.
  • BS-Engineering (EE/ME preferred), MBA degree preferred.
  • Travel required, approximately 35%, primarily domestic but some international.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skill s .
  • Utility experience preferably in the area of market interface for delivery of large-scale innovative grid services including Microgrids and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).
  • Ability to interface with internal and external customers/suppliers, preferred experience with Public Utility Commissions, and other commercial energy, environmental, business and non-profit stakeholders.
  • Experience working with various contract mechanisms including Power Purchase Agreement or Grid Service Purchase Agreements
  • Experience interacting with community stakeholders, finance partners and utility partners and regulators specific to the advancement the large scale Microgrid, DER, DR projects.
