Job Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and customer focused professional to fill the Apprentice Gas Man position in Summerville, SC. Selected applicants will enter the gas organization as a Gas Man Apprentice with an opportunity to advance to the Journeyman level by attending our 4-year apprenticeship program. Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Operation, maintenance and construction of Dominion Energy SC’s Gas Distribution System.
  • Construction position assists in responding to repairs of accidental dig ins (service line and main repairs) and repairs other below-ground gas leaks, large pipe tapping and stopping projects and service line retirements.
  • Service position assists in responding to miscellaneous customer calls/concerns, setting, blocking and unblocking meters, pulling meters for testing, perform above ground leak repairs (at meter sets), paints meters, and conducting zero use and high bill complaint investigations.
  • Compliance positions assist in performing line locating, conducting leak surveys and atmospheric corrosion surveys and performing valve and station maintenance work and conducting odorant checks.
  • Must have the ability to read and apply applicable codes, document compliance activities and wear self-contained breathing apparatus in hazardous environments.
  • Constant standing, sitting, or walking, climbing ladders, crawling under houses and in attics, working outdoors in various weather conditions and/or driving 6 to 8 hours daily.
  • Lifting of up to 25 pounds repeatedly throughout the day and occasionally lifts of up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in trenches with mud and water, cutting or joining pipe both inside and outside, using a jackhammer and other heavy equipment to excavate sites for street construction.
  • Must have the ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus in hazardous environments.

    This position has been approved by the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs as having a Certified Gas Utility Worker Apprenticeship program. Gas Apprentices that have military service and have paid into the GI Bill may be eligible for supplemental compensation through the SC Commission on Higher Education/Veterans Affairs during the course of their apprenticeship.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
  • 0-2 yrs. experience
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, Class A within six months of start date.
  • Must be routinely available for call out or emergency situations and be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Must live within 25 miles from assigned work location

Education Requirements

Completion of high school or equivalent (i.e., GED) accredited by an organization that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or one of the entities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
