Job Overview:
The HVAC Engineer supports our customers’ operations by providing positive experiences,
sound advice, timely proposals and estimates of projects or repairs. The HVAC Engineer
evaluates applications of equipment, sizes equipment, ductwork and piping, supports estimating
projects, and troubleshoots equipment issues at customer facilities. All Engineers and Project
managers support our employees by selling well defined work scopes within our capabilities,
ensuring our field crew has the information, tools and materials needed to be successful, and
managing customer expectations. The HVAC Engineer works with customers to minimize down
time and costs while using our field personnel efficiently. Projects should serve our customer’s
best interests, be profitable, and finish on time.

Responsibilities:
 Create a positive experience through the service and support of people. 
Represent Rasmussen Mechanical Services as the preferred mechanical service

provider for customers, employees, and business partners. Maintain the highest level of
business ethics, thereby increasing customer, employee, and business partner loyalty. 

Be a technical advisor inside and outside the company for HVACR, International
Mechanical Code and ASHRAE standards. This will require study of code publications
and performance of calculations. 

Perform sales activities, including travel as required with occasional overnight stays.
 Inspect customer equipment, primarily HVAC, for signs of damage or improper operation

and make sound recommendations for improvement. 
Analyze pictures, drawings, specifications, project requirements, client needs, etc. in a

project sales capacity to prepare estimates for projects.
 Provide customers with solutions for performance enhancement and proactive resolution

of issues. Develop and present proposals to customers, often involving: cost
effectiveness, return on investment calculations, pictures, drawings, specifications, duct
and line sizing, equipment sizing, site review and other documents. Follow up with
customers to sell proposed projects. 

Prepare all proposals and document all sales activities within the CRM system. Record
sales leads, contact information, referrals, future opportunities, and follow-ups. 

Increase market penetration by securing new customers and expanding services
provided to existing customers. Solicit support and communicate effectively with other
departments to deepen customer relationships. Follow-up on all leads from field
personnel, service technicians, Service Coordinators, Location Managers, and other
RMS employees. Maintain excellent relationships with field personnel.


Take the lead in selling planned maintenance agreements to customers, incorporating all
appropriate RMS offerings that provide value to the customer. 

Review, understand, and manage all aspects of assigned projects, including (but not
limited to) associated estimates of equipment, materials, subcontractors and manpower
required for the project; as well as timelines, terms of payments, completion schedules,
etc. that are part of the company’s contractual obligation. 

Maintain project document control and cost accounting (Job File), including:
o Purchase requisition/purchase order development & administration
o Subcontractor administration
o Change order documentation to customer and from sub-vendors
o Vendor invoice review & approval
o Progress billings & payment requests
o Drawings & submittals
o Schedule of values & project job cost accounting
o Project close-out documentation 

Ensure project financial standards are maintained, including but not limited to,
profitability, labor productivity, invoicing accuracy and schedule, subcontracts, payment
terms and conditions to sub-vendors and customers. 

Ensure compliance with company standards of quality, cost, safety, timeliness, and
performance. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal legal requirements. 

Inspect customer facilities and determine solutions to fit customers’ needs. Primarily,
inspections will involve HVACR, Chillers, hydronic systems, ductwork and air handling
systems, but familiarity with all RMS services is expected. 

Determine manpower and material requirements for projects based on the complexity of
the work relative to the capabilities of available field personnel and the planned or
promised completion time. 

Schedule manpower, materials, and subcontractors to efficiently and cost effectively
complete the project. 

Solicit quotes from, issue purchase orders to, and coordinate with subcontractors.
 Communicate with customers to ensure their needs are being met throughout the

project. Follow up after projects to ensure satisfactory completion of work and ask for
additional work and referrals. 

Achieve high levels of customer satisfaction. Resolve customer concerns and complaints
in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner. Exceed customer expectations. 

Develop relationships with engineers and general contractors to partner with our
company on projects. 

Maintain current project manpower forecasts to assist Location Manager in establishing
appropriate prioritization of overall location workloads and commitments. 

Exemplify and reinforce company safety policies and procedures, and resolve workplace
safety issues to ensure a safe work environment where all required and/or appropriate
safety measures are in place. This may include job site audits of safe work practices. 

Maintain product knowledge with representatives and local suppliers to stay abreast of
product lines and equipment. 

Maintain and improve sales skills and HVACR industry expertise through self-study,
product seminars, company-provided training, and self-improvement courses. 

Provide sales and marketing support at trade shows, lunch-and-learns, and seminars.
 Perform other duties as assigned.


Education/Qualifications:
 Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent professional experience.
 Professional and industry-specific certifications and licenses.

Experience:
 Technical expertise in HVACR & temperature control systems, and facility management.
 Minimum of three (3) years of HVAC System Design or equivalent experience.

(timely availability of required materials, equipment, tools, and manpower)
 Great “people skills” to work closely with management, sales, purchasing, accounting,

and field personnel within the Company; as well as with vendors, customers,
subcontractors, etc. outside the Company. 

A desire to continually learn new methods; adopt, accept and apply new technology from
internal or external resources and continually strive to identify more efficient ways to
perform existing processes. 

Challenge the “status quo” and motivate other team members, openly taking into
account the ideas and suggestions of others and incorporating constructive suggestions
into practice.

Physical & Mental Requirements:
 Must be able to lift 25-30 lbs. / sit for long periods of time / type / hear / see / speak

English clearly / operate business equipment. 
Must be able to read / write / spell & calculate. Must be able to understand and follow

written instructions, communicate effectively orally and written, and must be able to
listen effectively. 

Must possess prioritizing / organizational / multitasking and stress management skills.
 Must possess a valid driver’s license.
 Must pass pre-employment drug screen.
