Under the general direction of the Director of Career Services and Student Employment, the professional is responsible for the creation and application of career related services and programs for students and alumni in the College of Agriculture, Science, and Technology (CAST), and supports operational and strategic initiatives within the office. The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion and be able to engage stakeholders through effective communications and programming.
Essential Functions
The following are the functions essential to performing this job.
1. Assists students, including non-traditional students, with career exploration through internships, shadowing experiences, employment, volunteering and other career-related activities about the world of work in the College of Agriculture and Related Sciences
2. Work with employers of agriculture related careers and internships for recruitment activities
3. Counsel non-traditional students with entry into STEM careers, career transitions or displacements
4. Assists with students with resumes seeking internships, job shadowing and part-time work in STEM
5. Assists students with occupational, educational and employment research using experiential learning techniques and automation for internships, career changes or career advancement.
6. Work with STEM academic departments to ensure students receive academic credit for internships and co-ops
7. Assists with career education curriculum development and instructional techniques.
8. Serve on the DSU Career Services Internship/Career Committee as STEM representative
9. Coordinate agriculture and related science programs
10. Assists with conducting needs assessments for students, faculty and employers
11. Prepare internship job openings and communicate with students
Other Functions
Individuals in this job may be assigned one or more of the following tasks on a rotating or as-needed basis.
1. Performs research and/or statistical work as assigned
2. Collect career services data and prepares reports on student participation in programs and placements
3. Assists with managing automated career services and student employment information systems, inputting and retrieving data from university computing system
4. Schedule and provide evening office hours as needed for student appointments, workshops and other scheduled activities
5. Assists with the function of the Office of Career Services where needed
6. Provides career education and work readiness sessions for students, sometimes evenings
7. Perform other duties as requested or assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities
1. Good working knowledge of and experience in methods and theories of career development, career coaching, counseling, conducting and assessing skill inventories
2. Minimum two (2) years experience and proven success with interacting effectively with agriculture or science majors and multicultural students at collegiate level
3. Knowledge of curriculum development and classroom management.
4. Knowledge in labor relations, employment and staffing.
5. Ability to present information effectively in a classroom or seminar format
6. Good written and oral communication skills
7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
Qualification Standards
1. Education: Master’s degree in a Science, Education, Adult Education, Counseling, Human Resources, or other human relations field.
2. Successful experience: Minimum three (3) years experience in career and/or academic coaching, advising and working with students in the STEM areas. Professional work in the STEM areas can be substituted.
3. Other preferences: Experience in developing and managing special projects. Experience with innovating and managing academic and career-related programs.
