The Shops (Retail Department)
The Shops support the mission of Shaker Village by providing our guests the opportunity to purchase items that invoke positive memories, embody Shaker-style and promote a spirit of discovery.
Position Summary
Reporting to and partnering with the Retail Sales Manager, the Retail Sales Associate is responsible for providing exceptional customer service for guests, and for selling merchandise in SVPH's retail locations.
Responsibilities
- Welcomes all guests and creates a courteous, helpful environment in SVPH Shops.
- Manages retail sales, as assigned, proactively upselling and cross-marketing whenever possible.
- Provides accurate operation of point of sale systems, including software and cash register.
- Supports a quality customer experience by maintaining knowledge of merchandise, including distribution of that merchandise, among SVPH retail locations.
- Maintains the appearance of retail spaces by cleaning, stocking, pricing and collaborating with the Retail Sales Manager to create exceptional product presentation.
- Represents The Shops and SVPH professionally on the phone and in all written communications.
- Assists guests with their SVPH experience by maintaining knowledge of daily programs, dining opportunities, current exhibits, upcoming events and other topical guest-service information.
- Protects SVPH resources through appropriate stewardship of inventory and an awareness and reporting of any security issues.
- Observes safe cash handling procedures established by SVPH in management of the cash drawer, cash, check, gift certificate and credit card transactions.
- Is familiar with SVPH crisis management/emergency procedures, and serves as a responder to their level of training as required.
- Appropriately represents the organization, its Board and the President/CEO to guests, volunteers and donors.
- Supports a culture of philanthropy at SVPH by sharing the organization's mission and non-profit status with guests.
- Interacts with all Village staff and volunteers in a positive, helpful way, establishing a supportive culture that promotes high-quality experiences at SVPH.
- Updates job knowledge for him/herself by remaining aware of new standards; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks.
- Accomplishes facilities and organization mission by completing additional tasks as assigned and related results as needed.

Education and Experience
- An experienced customer-service team member, with at least two years in retail sales or hospitality.
- High School Diploma required, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Mental and Physical Requirements
- Analyze and interpret data, including data requiring basic arithmetic.
- Maintain concentration with time pressures and interruptions.
- Sit, stand or walk for considerable length of time.
- Perform physical activities such as bending, stooping, and moving inventory of up to 25lbs.
Working Environment and Conditions
- This position may require working evenings and weekends.
- This position may require working outdoors for certain events and programs.
