Summary/Objective

A commercial/industrial apprentice helps the electrician install, service and repair wiring, conduits, fixtures and other electrical devices and systems in an industrial or commercial setting. Industrial/commercial apprentices may work in different industries. They often work primarily either in maintenance or in construction, and their specific duties may depend on the employer. All work performed by an industrial/commercial apprentice must meet the regulations of the National Electrical Code.


Essential Functions

  • Help to install, maintain, and repair electrical control, wiring, and lighting systems
  • Help with panel wiring, construction and installation
  • Help with reading technical diagrams and blueprints and to interpret specifications and drawing
  • Help to perform general electrical maintenance
  • Help inspect transformers and circuit breakers and other electrical components
  • Help to troubleshoot electrical issues using appropriate testing devices
  • Help to repair and replace equipment, electrical wiring, or fixtures
  • Follow NEC state and local building regulations
  • Help with circuit breaker corrective maintenance

Competencies

  • Learn about and help to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics and electrical code specifications to determine layout of industrial electrical equipment installations
  • Learn about and help to install, examine, replace or repair electrical wiring, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, fiber-optic and coaxial cable assemblies, lighting fixtures and other electrical components
  • Learn about and help to test electrical and electronic equipment and components for continuity, current, voltage and resistance
  • Learn about and help to maintain, repair, install and test switchgear, transformers, switchboard meters, regulators and reactors
  • Learn about and help to maintain, repair, test and install electrical motors, generators, alternators, industrial storage batteries and hydraulic and pneumatic electrical control systems
  • Learn about and help to troubleshoot, maintain and repair industrial, electrical and electronic control systems and other related devices
  • Learn about and help to Conduct preventive maintenance programs and keep maintenance records
  • May help install, maintain and calibrate industrial instrumentation and related devices.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to outdoor elements.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The position must have the ability to lift heavy objects weighing at times up to 50 pounds and carry that weight a minimum of 20 feet on a regular, recurring basis. Must have the ability to walk over uneven, steep, or difficult terrain for distances of over one mile on a regular, recurring basis and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. Must be able to work in an aerial lift device with a weight limit of 350 pounds. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to climb up to and onto elevated equipment and stand for long periods of time. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina. Must have the ability to hear long distances, see long distances and differentiate between colors, and have depth perception.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week or Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 50 hours per week. This position frequently requires long hours and weekend work.

Travel

Employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Work hours will be adjusted to meet the needs of the business and may include weekends.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License
  • No Minimum ofrelevant work experience

    Preferred Education and Experience

  • Valid CDL-A license
  • Completion of a technical training apprentice program
