This position directs and coordinates the daily grain & oilseed handling operations of a barge loading terminal, and assists the Superintendent with overall operations of the facility, including safety, maintenance and housekeeping.


Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Determines work priorities; ensures the most beneficial use of labor and facility equipment. Works with corporate logistics, commercial traders, barge lines and railroads on a daily basis to set priorities and communicate facility requirements
  • Assists with coordination of terminal logistics to include: truck and rail receiving and barge loading.
  • Ensures employees are provided the required training and indoctrination for the area, jobs/ tasks prior to assigning work. Follows up with the operations staff to insure they are following proper procedures and wearing the appropriate PPE.
  • Coordination between the operations and commercial group at the location is key for a successful and profitable facility. The management team as a whole will need excellent communication and transparency to all issues to build and maintain teamwork.
  • Trains and assist new personnel in all aspects of facility operations.
  • Acts as Elevator Superintendent when Superintendent is absent.
  • Assists in the compliance of safety, corporate and environmental programs.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of budgets for the facility.
  • Grain stock management; space, quantity and quality.
  • Must be available 24 hours per day.

  • Completes various other duties and projects as assigned.

Required Skills

Basic qualifications:

  • Two plus years in operations supervision
  • Superior knowledge of OSHA, Food Safety, Grain Standards, and Environmental regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change within the work force
  • Demonstrated skills of team building and conflict resolution
  • Effective communication (verbal, written, presentation) skills
  • Broad knowledge of industrial machinery, including preventive maintenance, repairs, and replacement equipment
  • Strong working knowledge of computer operations
  • Thorough understanding of plant operations
  • Understanding of electrical systems helpful
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at extended heights of 175 feet, manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing, and move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more, which requires regular bending and lifting.

  • Typical office equipment: PC, telephone, fax/scanner/copy machine, mobile phone, truck/rail scales, bulk material handling equipment, diagnostic equipment, PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)

Working Conditions

  • Portions of the day will be spent in a climate-controlled office environment. The majority of the work day will be spent outside with routine visits to operational areas resulting in exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions. This may also result in exposure to dust, odors, gases, vapors, wet or slick surfaces and loud noises. Where appropriate, wears personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with Company standards and governmental regulations. Requires wearing safety equipment at times, including safety belts/harnesses and ear, eye, head and respiration protection. The extension of regular working hours is occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or respond to emergencies. Additionally, work may be required on weekends and holidays as dictated by business demands. Occasional travel is required

Employee Supervision

  • Supervises Shift Supervisors and hourly staff
  • Oversees the facility in the Superintendents absence
  • Has the authority to recommend hiring, firing, & discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage, & direct work.

Decision Making/Accountability

  • This position will be responsible for decisions affecting day to day operations of the site to ensure efficient, safe and timely completion of objectives in accordance with Company goals and objectives.

Safety, Health & Environmental Responsibilities

  • Is an active member of the facility SHE Program. Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. Ensures employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work. Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner. Ensures unsafe working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable.


Required Experience

Basic qualifications:

  • Five plus years of experience in the grain industry with increasing responsibility in the areas of mechanical and electrical maintenance, grain handling, and supervision
  • Two plus years of prior supervisory experience

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior grain elevator management experience

Basic qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver’s license

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or technical degree preferred
